"Arbeit Macht Frei", or "Work sets you free," an ideology of finding the path to virtue through labor. It was the slogan upon entry to one of the darkest memories of war in this side of the world. Auschwitz concentration camp and most Nazi concentration camps carry this slogan as a reminder to captives (more so a false promise) of freedom.
Shoes left forever by captives. Freedom unfortunately in the form of death. May the souls lost in the holocaust find the light to eternal peace.
The upside-down B, created by the prisoner who was tasked to make the sign, was an act of defiance for the falsehood of such slogan.
