Like most mountains in the world, the breath-taking Mount Pilatus comes with its own legend. One story is that the mountain looks like the belly of a large man, named Pilate, lying on his back and was thus named for him. The name may also be derived from "pileatus," meaning "capped," with snow.
"A medieval legend had dragons with healing powers living on the mountain. One starry night, a very bright phoenix-like dragon with flapping wings went from a cave in a great rock in the mount called Pilatus towards another cave, known as Flue, on the opposite side of the lake."
