Basílica de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, or The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, attracts a large number of Roman Catholic pilgrims from all around the world, earning the title "Shrine of the World." May 13 and October 13 are significant dates of the Fatima apparitions.

Famed for Milagre do Sol, or Miracle of Fátima, a series of events reported to have occurred miraculously on the year 1917, attended by a large crowd who had gathered in Fátima, Portugal, in response to a prophecy made by three shepherd children. The prophecy was that the Virgin Mary would appear and perform miracles on that date. Newspapers published testimony from witnesses who said that they had seen extraordinary solar activity, such as the Sun appearing to "dance" or zig-zag in the sky, careen towards the Earth, or emit multicolored light and radiant colors.
