The medieval stronghold of Blarney Castle near Cork was built before 1200.  A timber house was believed to have been built on the original site, then replaced with a stone fortification.

Yes! That's my reaction to seeing a Poison Garden among the extensive gardens surrounding the castle.

There is a Cannabis patch carefully guarded with fences. No picking!

"The faerie folk of Ireland are famed the world ove for their mischief and charm. They have of course been here longer than any of us and it is our duty to keep them safe in this special glade. They do, however, have a native cunning. So if you spot one, don't let it be fooling you."

Consider yourselves warned.

Paths around the castle take you to vast gardens and forests and several natural rock formations. But caution should be observed as the plants, wild animals and LEPRECHAUNS are protected in the area.

Want to be endowed with great eloquence and flattery? Then quest for the Blarney Stone, a block of carboniferous limestone set on the tower of the castle. A kiss to the stone will endow the kisser the "gift of gab."  But don't be fooled as this is not one easy task. The stone is set on the parapet's edge. The only way to touch the stone with the kisser's lips is to lean backwards on the parapet's edge. In the olden times, the kisser is literally dangling head-first on top of the tower while being assisted with another person or two, holding the kisser's ankles for support. The parapet is now fitted with wrought-iron guide rails and protective crossbars as seen in this photo. Totally safe, but can still trigger acrophobia or fear of heights.
